Just a little more information on how On The Side fills out the sound of the band. As stated in previous post we either purchase pre recorded bass and drum tracks to songs we intend to perform. Not the cheesy midi tracks that many people use. Tony creates those himself on his computer. And we do use both Tony’s cheesy creations and some real quality background tracks created by Jim McCarty out in Los Angeles. The tracks can be purchased online and downloaded right to your computer. So in most cases there is not much of a wait to get your purchased tracks.
Once we get the music downloaded, which ever of us has made the purchase, emails a copy to the other members of the band so individual practice can begin. The same is true with the tracks that we create. Between the three of us is an iPod, and, three iPhones containing the tracks in case the unit in use crashes. We should probably make CD copies of the stuff as well and have a Cd player on hand for emergencies.
With an iPod or Phone you have to set up each song track in it’s own play list. Other wise the iPod will continue on to the next song whether you are ready or not. Giving each song it’s own playlist eliminates this problem. The music stops at the end of each song. If you want to play one song right after the other you can of course set your play list up into sets with however many songs you want in a particular set. This requires everyone to be thinking and ready go as soon as the next song begins. We prefer to take time between each song.
The other thing to be conscious of is battery life. We have to have the power cords available if all iPods and Phones are low on battery power. Hope just switching to another iPod or Phone will be sufficient.
This is how we do it in On The Side.
